Juror Comments:

Thoughtful site planning - clear organization balancing multiple demands and 'fronts'.

Low corridors release into the layered volume of the stair lobby, opening to views and overhead daylight.

The lobby has the potential to be a true community space at the heart of the school.

Special Citation
Project: Tree House - Private Residence
Project Location: Poplar Valley, PA
Architect Firm: Schoonover & Vanderhoof Architects
Project Architect: Wayne W. Vanderhoof, AIA
Photographer: Saglinda H. Roberts

Phone: 570-424-2980

Juror Comments:

The apparent indifference of house to tree is a suggestion of fantasy, as if the house was built on the ground and the tree grew up through it.

Free play of workmanship and problem solving in the construction feels right for the building type and site.

Pleasure taken in the rustic detailing is apparent and skillful.

Juror Comments:

Building conceived as topography inside and out, yet it still presents a facade to High Street.

Evocative drawings suggest a rich spatial experience - we hope the executed project retains the wonderful quality of the conception.

Juror Comments:

This project responds to the challenge of making a very large building legible by creating a network of day lit interior streets.

Public concourse solves the multiple point of entry problem.

Articulation of differentiation with economy of means and within a clearly defined overall language.

Award of Merit
Project: Additions & Alterations to the Governor Mifflin Middle School
Project Location: Shillington, PA
Architect Firm: The Architectural Studio
Project Architect: Barry L. Brobst, AIA

An admirably sustainable project - dramatic transformation of a problematic building with minimum of new construction.

Careful analysis of problem leads to thoughtful planning interventions and excellent use of natural light.

Manipulation of section to admit daylight completely redefines the plan.

Award of Merit
Project: Ben Franklin Technology Partners, Tech Ventures II
Project Location: Bethlehem, PA
Architect Firm: Spillman Farmer Architects
Project Architect: Christa Duelberg-Kraftician, AIA LEED AP
Photographer: Barry Halkin
Website: www.spillmanfarmer.com
Phone: 610-865-2621

Juror Comments:

A single facade addition with a densely layered section for an existing building which lacked a public face.

Facade composition uses material layering and changing planes to create shadows and depth that are visually interesting and performatively appropriate.

A high level of design execution at large and small scales - an elegant, intelligent design.

Award of Excellence
Project: Bayles Residence, Entertainment Room Addition
Project Location: Bethlehem, PA
Architect Firm: Gouck Architects
Project Architect: Eugene Berg, Jr., AIA
Photographer: Steve Wolfe Photography
Phone: 610-439-8818

Juror Comments:

Pristine, almost ethereal room - assured, well detailed, simple, and spare.

Despite relatively small size of project, it provides evidence of thinking at multiple scales.

Creating a common focus of existing and new rooms on the patio space reorganizes the house in relation to its exterior.

We applaud the architects' success fitting a clean, modern interior into a neo-Georgian shell.

The result is thoughtfully underspoken - complex and contradictory, but without distracting irony.
