    Weihnacht Huts

  • Project Location: Bethlehem, PA
  • Architect Firm: Nikolov Architecture and Design
  • Project Architect: Nik Nikolov, AIA

  • Jurror comments:

This project starts with an effective and beautiful form and follows it up with well thought out details.  The form works beautifully on its own but is an impressive sight when in multiple.  While budgetary concerns may have lead the design, they are not the focus in the final product.

Within its simplicity of form, while limited in budget, the designers showed a nuanced and thoughtful use of materials which created a surprisingly bold result.  Though limited by budget one feels that the designers used this restriction as a springboard for inspiration.

Award of Excellence

  • Project Location: Cetronia, PA
  • Architect Firm: Spillman Farmer Architects

  • Jurror comments:

This project took a utilitarian building type and made it special. The design moves are simple and established a consistent dialogue for the project.  The details are well thought out and strategic.

Without adding unnecessary flourish the design is a clean and thoughtful expression of function; allowing the form to be simple, clean and elegant.  The moments of expression are understated in a manner that does not overwhelm but imbues the project with details complimentary to the overall form.

Award of Merit

    DeSales University Salesian Center

  • Architect Firm: Breslin Ridyard Fadero Architects

  • Jurror comments:

The composition of parts brings a level of sophistication to this project.  The plan is easy to navigate and thoughtful for a gateway building. The bell tower is a strong gesture complimented by the building’s scale and openness.

Appropriate in scale and magnitude as a gateway building the composite parts, especially the bell tower, creates an icon for the entrance of the campus.

  • Project:

    Krupp Park Amphitheater

  • Project Location: Quakertown, PA
  • Architect Firm: MKSD Architects

  • Jurror comments:

The sculptural form of the amphitheater is detailed with a high level of competency.  The thoughtful selection and application of the materials work well with the public use of the structure.

The light expression of the canopy in relationship to the heaviness of the walls, seating and materials create an interesting dichotomy that is resolved through clear attention to detail and making; ultimately creating a well built and competent project.

Special Citation

  • Jurror comments:

The details in this project make for exciting spaces. The juxtaposition of a heavy timber ceiling against glass walls and an exposed fireplace create a tension and something unexpected.  The attention paid to the interior environment compliments its exterior surroundings.

Though the building has an eclectic design language, the attention to detail and materiality allows for an appreciation of each style.  The main dining room and its timber roof creates an incongruity of heavy and light materials that asks for attention
